Char-Lan junior girls soccer team scores EOSSAA title
Crusaders top Holy Trinity for second championship this spring
The junior girls soccer team from Char-Lan District High School has nabbed two titles this spring, both coming against Holy Trinity Catholic Secondary School.
The most recent, on May 31 in Williamstown, was the EOSSAA championship, which the Crusaders claimed 2-0 over the Falcons.
Char-Lan actually played Holy Trinity on the day, also seeing their league rival in preliminary play, where the result was a 2-1 win. The Crusaders’ other match was a 10-0 drubbing of St. John Catholic High School (Perth).
Coach Shirley MacDonell was quoted in the UCDSB press release saying her “girls played exceptionally well throughout all their games. They had played against Holy Trinity a couple of times in the regular season and the score was always close in those matchups.
“We are super proud of the girls. They played very well as a team, practised a lot, worked hard, and had great attitudes. Their season started with some solid defence, excellent goaltending by Paige Rombough, and then our midfielders just came back and controlled the play for most of our games. And of course, we had the forward line who could put the ball in the net.”
Holy Trinity qualified for EOSSAA as a wildcard entrant.
Char-Lan also won the SDGAA league playoff title, over the Falcons.
