High school hockey: updates on boys, girls leagues
Girls teams to battle on Alexandria ice February 14, boys finals set for February 27 in Long Sault
We are down to the home stretch in SDGAA high school hockey, with the St. Joseph’s Panthers, out of Cornwall, topping both the girls and boys standings, with 4-0 and 7-0 records, respectively.
The Panthers girls will take to the ice tomorrow, February 14, in Alexandria, for a day-long tournament that includes teams representing La Citadelle (3-1), Tagwi (2-2-1), Holy Trinity (2-2), Glengarry (1-2-1), Char-Lan (1-3) and North Dundas / Seaway (0-4).
The schedule for the day is as follows:
8 a.m.: Glengarry vs Holy Trinity
9 a.m.: Tagwi vs Char-Lan
10:00 a.m.: St. Joseph’s vs Holy Trinity
11 a.m.: La Citadelle vs ND/Seaway
noon: Char-Lan vs St. Joseph’s
1 p.m.: Tagwi vs La Citadelle
2 p.m.: Glengarry vs ND/Seaway
The second tournament of the girls season was held February 7 in Long Sault, after being rescheduled from January.
Results on the day saw Sr. Joseph’s top Tagwi 4-1 and black Glengarry 5-0. The Gaels’ other game resulted in a loss was to La Citadelle, which also went into the books at 5-0.
Char-Lan nabbed a 1-0 victory over North Dundas / Seaway by default before being humbled late by Holy Trinity 6-2.
The Warriors picked up a 1-0 win over North Dundas / Seaway by default
Les Patriotes earned a triumph over the Falcons, 6-1.
Note, all North Dundas / Seaway were recorded as default 1-0 losses. By league rule, other scores are limited to a maximum goal differential of 5.
Girls finals are booked for February 28, to be hosted by the first-place school, which at this point looks likely to be St. Joseph’s.
Boys league
The SDGAA high school boys hockey finals are scheduled for February 27, at the Long Sault arena, hosted by St. Joseph’s, the top seed.
The Panthers completed regular-season play with a perfect record of 7 wins. Char-Lan drew second, on a record of 5-2, with La Citadelle third (4-2-1) and Holy Trinity fourth (3-3-1). The four teams will be skating in the finale.
St. Joseph’s is booked to take on the Catholic rival Falcons in the opening semifinal game at 9 a.m. The second semi, booked for a 10:30 a.m. start, will feature the Crusaders and Patriotes.
The league playoff championship game is booked for a 1 p.m. opening puck drop.
Two schools ended regular-season play last week in Long Sault, as North Dundas finished with a 1-6 record and Tagwi went winless at 0-7.
Results from the last regular-season tournament played on February 6 saw the Panthers skate to two wins: 6-1 over Holy Trinity and 5-1 against North Dundas.
Char-Lan kept pace with victories over Les Patriotes (3-2) and the Warriors (3-2).
In other action, the Falcons edged the Devils 1-0 and La Citadelle clipped Tagwi 2-1.
