Alexandria’s Island Park will be abuzz with high school soccer activity this week, as the facility hosts senior ‘A’ EOSSAA tournaments for boys and girls teams from across the region.

Glengarry District High School’s senior girls will be there, seeded first in the six-team girls pool. Joining the Gaels are the Notre Dame Catholic High School Celtic Warriors (from Carleton Place, ranked second), the Mackenzie Community School Mustangs (Deep River, third), the St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic High School Ravens (Russell, fourth), the Ernestown Secondary School Eagles (Odessa, fifth), and the Rideau District High School Lions (Elgin, sixth).

Pool matches are slated to be played on May 24, with each team taking to the turf twice. Games are set to be 85 minutes, with two 40-minute halves and a five-minute interval.

The Gaels, in Pool A, will play first at 9.a.m., facing Ernstown. Their second match is set for noon, against Mackenzie. Both contests will take place on the Island Park’s north field.

The south field will be in use as well for other matches. There will also be girls preliminary games played in the 3 p.m. timeslot.

The top two teams in each pool will advance to day two action, playing crossover semifinals starting at 9 a.m. The girls championship match is booked for a noon kickoff. No consolation final is scheduled.

Senior Boys

École secondaire publique L'Héritage won the senior boys SDGAA title last week, on the field at La Citadelle, and both squads will in fact participate at EOSSAA in Alexandria. The SD&G final was a 1-0 decision in favour of the Dragons.

For EOSSAA, the Dragons are seeded third, while the Patriotes are ranked fifth. The teams are placed in opposite pools so they won’t have to play each other on day one.

Pool matches for L’Heritage will see the Dragons tangle with top-ranked École secondaire publique Le Sommet, from Hawkesbury, at 1:30 p.m., and Carleton Place’s Notre Dame Catholic High School at 4:30 p.m.

The Patriotes are booked to take on St. Mary Catholic High School (Brockville, second seed) at 10:30 a.m. and Mackenzie Community School (Deep River, fourth) at 4:30 p.m.

As with the girls, the top two teams from day one will advance to day two playoffs on May 25. Semifinals are slated for a 10:30 a.m. kickoff, with the championship match booked for a 12:30 p.m. start.

Notes

On the line for the teams are spots at OFSAA, the provincial tournament. The girls event is set for June 2-4 in Belle River (near Windsor), while the boys are booked for Jordan Station (Niagara region) on the same dates.

At last week’s SDGAA playoff tournament in Cornwall, La Citadelle reached the final as a result of their 4-2 win over GDHS in the semi. L’Heritage, the top seed, got past Char-Lan 4-0 in the other semifinal.
