Alexandria’s entry in the junior B Eastern Ontario Junior Hockey League, the Glens, are booked to host their main camp this weekend, in preparation for the 2021-22 competitive season.

Under new head coach Sean Power (see earlier story about this here), members of the Glens have been skating a rink in Ottawa over the past month, hitting the ice six times.

The main camp, booked for the nation’s capital August 21 and 22, is where the staff really gets down to business, though, as coaches will assess returning talent and new prospects, coming off a 2020-21 campaign that really never was, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The team’s general manager, Derick Viau, tells me he was able to secure a great deal for summer ice rental at the Sensplex, where the earlier skates were held and the main camp will take place.

After the two-day camp, the Glens will move to St. Isidore for the remainder of their pre-season training.

With the Glengarry Sports Palace in Alexandria (the team’s traditional home) closed for this season, the Glens will use the Maxville Sports Complex rink as their temporary home base. Viau tells me that the ice there is expected to be ready by September 11, with the team’s first booking there the next day.

For pre-season games are scheduled for next month:

September 17 in Maxville (versus the Char-Lan Rebels)
September 18 in Williamstown (versus the Char-Lan Rebels)
September 24 in Maxville (versus the Casselman Vikings)
September 28 in Casselman (versus the Casselman Vikings)

The EOJHL has been approved by the province and local health authorities to return to full, traditional play this season. Players and staff are required to be fully vaccinated, according to the league’s new policy (see story here).

Glens staff are already compliant with this stipulation.

Viau notes, at this time, COVID-19 vaccination is not mandatory for spectators, though they will be required to wear face masks at all times and follow other health and safety guidelines.
